Adding a New Page or Blog Post

Adding Pages and Blog Posts are very similar, however, posts have some additional options that we will cover later.

Let’s get started with adding a page

  • Login to your dashboard
  • Select Pages option as shown. Select Add New

Pages

You will be taken to the page editor as shown below.

  • Type your page title (Heading 1)
  • Type your page content

Heading 2 should be used for headings in your pages. The rest of the text should be paragraph text. To format text, simply select it with your mouse and then select the format option.

You can format your text using the drop down menu. The search engines take note of these Headings. The Title of your page or post is always presented as Heading 1 so there is no need to select this within your page copy. Heading 2 will be fine within your page as these are sub headings.

In addition, there are the typical format options that you have in word processor software. Hovering with your mouse displays a popup to say what the icon represents. Please experiment with these to get an idea of the options. Remember, select your text and then select the format option.

Publish Your Page

While creating and editing your page you will want to be in draft mode. You can click save draft anytime. This Publish box is usually to the right of your text but may be below depending on your website setup.

To see what your page will look like, click Preview. When you are ready to go live with your page press Publish

You can also click the edit options to change the status, change the visibility and you can even set a publish date for the future.

Page Attributes

Here you can select Parent page which will make your new page a sub page of the parent. If you select No Parent it will display it in your main navigation menu.

In addition, you can select a different Page Template if your theme has the option.

Comments

Also, somewhere on your page / post editor you will see Discussion options. If you tick the Allow Comments and then Save / Publish your page this allows people to leave comments at the end of your page / post. Typical blog posts have comments but web pages usually don’t but that is your choice. Selecting the Allow comments checkbox allows people to leave comments at the bottom of your page or post. To turn this off, uncheck the box.

Trackbacks and pingbacks can be left unchecked for simplicity. If you want to understand these options click the trackback and pingbacks text for a full explanation.

Blog Posts

To add a new blog post simply select the Posts option from the menu on the left of your dashboard.

posts

Everything in the post editor is the same as pages with the exception of the following additions that just apply to posts.

Categories

Categories are a great way of organising your blog posts. Because a blog is formatted in reverse chronological order, eventually old posts disappear off the bottom of the page.

When you create your new blog post you can add categories here in the Categories section.

categories

You can select any of your previous used categories or Add New Category. Each post can have one or more category assigned to it.

Think of categories as your main broad headings. For example if your post is about red Adidas shoes your categories might be Shoes, Adidas

Tags

Tag are additional and optional. Think of these as a narrower version of categories.

Tags

For example you may not want to see too many categories at the top of your post so you may use tags for additional features. i.e.

Red, Stretch mesh, breathable, Molded sole, sockliner, Non-slip lining, Non-marking rubber, adiWEAR,

Tags and categories can appear on your website in differing ways depending on the design.

Typically, they will be present on posts, with categories at the top and tags at the bottom.
